Thoughts

I met Cedric in 1999 at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory before he retired where we shared an office with others. He worked on his last project there, the refurbishment of the great Birr castle telescope with lovely polished brass eye pieces. A project he really enjoyed doing. It was great to talk to him about space instrumentation and admire his drawings. We still have his hand drawings in our archive from many years ago, at times accompanied with his very wry and witty instruction. The artist inside him always shone through as well as the cheeky dry wit. After his retirement I enjoyed watching him flying his ultra light weight aircraft models at K2 in Crawley, every year. His models always looked so good. We still enjoy one of his lasting contributions to our office, the model wood worm he made and added to the intricate wood carving above the fire place. It's eyes still look at us, each day. I'll miss Cedric's gentle character and cheek.

Cedric was such an important part of my time at MSSL as a research student in the early to mid 1970s. He did most of the drawings for my PhD Skylark Sounding Rocket project. I learnt so much from him. And he was always so patient with a newcomer such as myself. What I learnt from Cedric was such an important part of the learning process and of becoming a "rocket scientist"! He was very knowledgeable and happy to share his know-how. And I remember conversations with Cedric on many subjects - including the fact that despite both of us appearing to be very English, we both had "foreign" names! A true gentleman in all senses of the word.

Such a gentle, fun, kind and talented man. I have such happy memories of my teenage years living just up the road from Ceddie, Mary, my dear friend Jane and Martin. Rest in peace Ceddie !
